Top 10 Movies for Girls' Night

Have you ever spent a night with your friends, decided you'll watch a movie and you all search on your phones, looking for something to watch; and end up spending more time scouring the internet for the perfect movie rather than watching said movie? I've compiled a list that is more than watchable, and in-fact entertaining for any type of group you have.

10. Monster- In-Law (2005)

Letterboxd reviews can be a bit pretentious, so I ask that you give this one a chance. We're not having a slumber party to reflect on Coppola's direction of the Godfather, or the cinematography of an arthouse film; we're here to have fun, and whats more fun than watching Jane Fonda beat living shit out of J.Lo? (I still love Jenny from the block don't worry). Plus, Wanda Sykes is a delight in this movie.

9. Mean Girls (2004)

A girlhood classic. We know it, we love it, we reference it every Wednesday and every October 3rd. It's funny, a little raunchy, and has a positive message at the end to let your sleepover end in sweet dreams.

So fetch!

8. Legally Blonde (2002)

Of course this had to make the list, considering its' hyperfem girly aesthetic and soundtrack, it's a girl classic. I grew up on this movie and can confidently say that I would never make a rookie mistake like forgetting about the amonium-thioglycolate in a perm! Elle's wardrobe and positive attitude are perfect to uplift you and your friends. Remember, when in doubt: bend and snap!

7. Death Becomes Her (1992)

You may recognize this film as the inspiration for Sabrina Carpenter's Taste music video. A comedic take on mortality is perfect for the girls who enjoy a little dark humour, but don't worry it's more silly than off-putting. A talented cast goes a long way, and this delivers something different than a run-of-the-mill comedy.

6.  Scream (1996)

The perfect movie for a sleepover in autumn, but it also holds up as a scary movie year-round. It's fun to get scared with movies like this, but thankfully this isn't a nightmares-forever kind of scary (it's certainly not as scary as my student debt). What I like about Scream is that it's pretty self-aware with its tropes and cliches, but ultimately does have a good foundation in the script and Wes Craven's direction.

5. First Wives Club (1996)

Scheming comedies with female leads is one of my favourite genres. First Wives Club is a crowd-pleaser for a mature group but still has appeal to younger generations. One aspect you may appreciate is that it has great pacing - it never drags or feels boring. I'm also a sucker for anything with Bette Midler (still waiting for Midler on the Roof). There is a star-studded cast beyond the leads, but truly the performance and chemistry between Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton and Bette Midler is what makes the movie so special.

4. Sabrina (1954)

If your friends are also vintage lovers, or Audrey Hepburn fans, show them this. Much less turmoil than Breakfast at Tiffany's, it really is such a sweet movie, it's an old romcom! Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn and William Holden star in this gem. Think The Summer I Turned Pretty in the 50s.

3. Spirited Away (2001)

Show your friends this animated flick if they've yet to see it, and blow their minds. You will also have a lot of fun making fun of Yobaba. Trust me. An adventure movie is always a good call.

2. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

One of the ten things I love about this movie is that it appeals to everyone. The girly-girls like Bianca, or the rough-around-the-edges girls like Kat. Older and younger generations can appreciate the cast, and the witty, yet sincere script. If you aren't convinced, let me give you one reason to watch it - Heath Ledger singing Frank Valli's Can't Take My Eyes Off of You on a soccer field.

1. Mamma Mia (2008)

If you want the ultimate comfort movie, this is it. Great music, an insanely talented cast, set on a beautiful island in Greece...what more could a girl want? This is perfect for any group, but I will say it is fitting for a mother-daughter watch. Either way, who doesn't love seeing Pierce Brosnan sing Abba?

(I must admit I'm a Colin Firth girl through and through)

Enjoy girls' night and remember, it's not really about the movie, just how much you can make fun of it with your friends. If you found this list to be helpful, feel free to subscribe to my blog!
